Atheists and anti-theists

Dootzkie Saturday, March 26, 2011
We are back on subject today, mostly because I need to find a nice template first before remodeling everything here.
Theists and fake theists are covered. It's obvious that theists are great and that you wouldn't have an issue with them if you are sane, but that they are so rare that they might soon become a myth.

In the atheist corner we got a similar division, atheists and anti-theists. One group is sane, tolerant and kind towards their opposite polarity, while the other, very similar to fake theists is hardly bearable even for those that would agree with them. So, lets get cracking!

~Atheists differ from theists only in the way that they don't believe in a higher power of any form and because of that often don't follow strict dogmas. They can still be spiritual and can follow some teachings, but still without the need to have a higher being that is going toreward them or punish them for their acts. They don't care if you are a theists or an atheist because they don't have to present their stance as the only right one. Like proper theists, they enjoy their view of the world and also let others develope their own separate views. Speciments of this group, while rare, can be encountered.
For me, talking with a proper atheist that spends his/hers fare share of time pondering about the nature of the universe is always a time well spent.

~Anti-theists on the other hand are a group that defines them self more on what they are against then what they are for. This is why they won't be able to explain to you what they are for but will jump on the subject on how silly it is to believe in a higher being. They are the modern inquisition that uses scientific "facts" as their weapons that, in my opinion, dishonors the greatness of science. Members of this group are the same as fake theist in everything but name and idea of a higher power.
I have always thought that people that define them self or their purpose via the idea of being against something rather then for something detend more on the institutions they oppose then those that arein those institutions. This is why they need their "enemy" and this is why they arm them self with "facts" that they build up like a tower on the sand.

Perfect example for this would be Richard Dawkins.
When you see him in a debate with fellow scientists or when he is talking for a show or a documentary, he is polite, mannered and has a great way of using beautiful metaphors to explain very important issues that influence us all.
On the other hand, when talking with... Well actually, against the members of any thing that isn't backed by facts, he desides to abandon his dignity and the sharpness of mind and starts tossing spageti all over the place. Ok... We get it... Now stop that childish behaviour, you bloody genius!

Also, judging by the comments, I think I will need to cover the ideas of gnosticism and agnosticism as well as my favorite starting point for almost any chat/talk - ignosticism.

Hope you enjoyed this so far.

Be well

Hmm. I guess I am more of an atheist than I thought. I had considered myself agnostic - but I must admit I never really looked into a definition of agnostic

Although, I can't say I'm a full theist; whilst I definitely see the futility in debating existence and such - I must embarrassingly admit I get sucked in sometimes and get caught up in trying to dislodge a belief system in another.

In my defense, these are cases in which I feel I have been harassed by the beliefs of another - in the sense that the other party is expecting me to be on the same base level of agreement with their beliefs. Assuming that I take into account the same guilt laden - see here I go again. Sigh. Stopping myself before I rant out the comment box limit.

I am an atheist, hear me roar! I'm kindhearted and do more for the community than most people who are theist. And they say I'm the immoral one. talk about getting their views backwards

there is something like atheism that involves the belief that there could possibly be a god like figure. That is what i am. The name escapes me though.

I am an anti-theist when I'm faced with stupid arguments - and by stupid I mean badly presented and explained, such as "God surely exists because there has to be something perfect in the world." Then I can't help myself but rant, rant, rant. But normally, I'm an atheist who is perfectly fine with others' belief systems, as long as they don't impose it on me.

I am right there with Jux. I believe in something higher than anything we can imagine but I do not believe it governs our lives and every movement. I believe this planet was specifically designed, but isn't left to "fate"

Nice. Some pretty interesting arguments here.

seems I'm more of an anti-theist than the athiest I originally thought I was..

I'm an anti-theist sometimes, but I'd consider myself an agnostic-atheist. I don't believe in god and I don't think we can actually know if god exists...but I don't believe he/she does.

@Jux it's agnostic.
I don't really think of whether I'm atheist or anti-theist, I just don't concern myself with it, live my life and one day I'll rot in the ground.

Guessed agnosticism would be next. I define it as politically correct buttholes who don't wanna make a stand for what they truly believe. Or maybe those are fake agnostics, and true agnostics really do keep an open mind. Oh well.

Well I view God, if it exists, as the creator being so if our universe is just some science experiment then God could just be some fat sweaty alien.

It seems pretty clear to me that that religion, if you look at it objectively, is total crap. But most people are indoctrination from childhood and when they get to the age where they should stop believing they have a hard time letting go

Thoughtful post that I can tell you've spent some time thinking about. Thanks!

I would personaly consider myself as an agnostic theist, as in I believe in a higher power, but not any form of religion.

I really like your blog! It's always nice to see people putting some quality time into their layout to make it user friendly, it makes all the difference the visitors.

I am up in the air on my religion. Its easy to be an atheist until your loved ones start dying and if your atheist thoughts are right, that means they are lost forever.

Believing in god might not be the cool thing to do, but to me it sounds like a better thought than never seeing your loved ones again.

I don't know where that puts me? My Grandfather was an engineer and had alot of machines and equipment in his basement, he told me one of them was a time machine but he couldn't use it because it only went back in time and he couldn't return.

So i crept down in to the basement and turned the thing on, it made a whirring noise and then died, but i firmly believe i sent particles back through a sub atomic wormhole to the point of the big bang, creating the universe and making me God.

I'm an atheist and the problem I've always had with anti-theists is the fact that they apparently can't understand what 'God' is *supposed* to represent.

Woo atheists! lol

I consider myself open minded to any individual and I respect them. In fact the thought of making them give up their beliefs and hurt them makes me uncomfortable. I'd rather not try to convert theists to atheism. However, those already exploring atheism I will reinforce within them my own perspective only because I know it won't be earth shattering for them. Good post

It's a good way of making difference between one and the other. Many people thinks they are the same, as they cannot see farther than black and white.

I like this blog, I follow you

Very thoughtful post! I like your comparisons on atheists and anti-theists. I prefer when others don't have an agenda.

NorthernLad said...

I suppose one can call me an "agnostic atheist", meaning that while I don't believe in God(s), I make no absolute statements on their existence.

But really, I've stopped giving a damn. Let people believe whatever the hell they want. As long as they don't espouse their beliefs to someone unwilling to listen, or murder someone due to differing viewpoints. It really doesn't matter at all, just live yer bleedin' life.

Good read mate, keep it up.
